We Built Something for the Millions of Nigerians Selling on WhatsApp. It's Called UPshop.ng

It is 7:30 AM on a Tuesday. Adaeze is already awake, phone in hand, replying to WhatsApp messages before she has had her morning tea.

"How much?" "Do you have size 12?" "What's your account number?" "Abeg, send me the price list again."

Thirty messages. Fifteen different customers. Three of them asking about the same dress she posted on her status two days ago.

By 9 AM, Adaeze has taken three "orders", none of them confirmed, two of them probably ghosts. She has sent her bank details seven times. She has typed out her price list four times. And she still does not know if the woman who said "I'll pay later" yesterday actually paid, because she forgot to check her banking app.

This is not a small problem. This is how millions of Nigerian sellers live every single day.

We know, because we see it everywhere. In the markets. In the DMs. In the Instagram comment sections where sellers type "DM for price" under every post because there is simply no better way.

We are Techvilla Technologies, and we decided to build a better way.

Introducing UPshop - The Online Store With No "Corporate" Stress

UPshop.ng is our new product. And we built it with one very specific Nigerian seller in mind: the person who is already selling, already hustling, already making money - but doing everything the hard way.

Not for the business owner with a registered company and a corporate bank account.

Not for the seller who can afford Shopify's monthly fees in US dollars.

For Adaeze. For the side hustler selling skincare from her bedroom in Owerri. For the fabric dealer in Aba who takes orders on WhatsApp and writes them in a notebook. For the young man selling phone accessories from his stall in Onitsha Main Market who wants customers in Abuja to find him.

UPshop gives every one of them a real, professional online store - in five minutes, for free, with no CAC registration and no corporate bank account required.

Why We Built It This Way

We have been building technology for Nigerian businesses for years at Techvilla. We have set up network infrastructure for offices. We have built websites and mobile apps. We have helped companies go digital.

But the one thing we kept seeing, over and over again, was that the biggest gap was in the market stalls. It was in the WhatsApp groups. It was in the Instagram DMs.

Nigeria has over 40 million micro and small businesses. The vast majority of them are already selling online, just not in a structured way. They are doing it through WhatsApp broadcasts, Instagram stories, Facebook posts, and handwritten delivery lists.

The tools that existed to help them were built for a different world. Shopify is priced in dollars and designed for formal businesses with payment gateways and shipping integrations. Jumia and Konga require company registration and formal vendor agreements. Even some of the newer Nigerian platforms assumed you had a corporate account and a formal business structure before they would let you sell.

We thought: why should a market trader have to become a corporation before she can have an online store?

She shouldn't. So we built something that meets her exactly where she is.

What Sellers Actually Get

When you signs up on UPshop.ng, you get their own store link. Not a listing on someone else's marketplace. Your own page. upshop.ng/yourshopname. Something you can share on WhatsApp Status, Instagram bio, TikTok, or print on a flyer.

Your customers browse like a real store. Products displayed with photos and prices. Categories. A search bar. A shopping cart that calculates totals automatically, including delivery costs the you set yourself.

Orders go straight to WhatsApp. When a customer checks out, a fully formatted order message is automatically sent to the your WhatsApp number. Item names, quantities, prices, delivery address, total - everything. No more piecing together an order from fifteen different messages.

Money goes directly to the your personal bank account. Not to UPshop. Not held in a wallet waiting for a weekly payout. Directly to whatever bank account the you already use. GTB, Access, Zenith, OPay, Moniepoint - it doesn't matter. If the bank sends SMS alerts (and they all do), the you know the moment money arrives.

There is a dashboard. Sellers can see their orders, track what's been paid, see their best-selling products, manage inventory, and, for our premium users - access full business analytics that would normally require an accountant. Revenue trends. Profit margins. Stock levels. Days until a product runs out. All in plain language, not financial jargon.

And they can generate a QR code for their store. A physical, downloadable QR code that they can paste on their stall, print on their packaging, or include on a business card. A customer scans it, lands on the store, and orders -no address, no phone calls, no DMs required.

The Part That Makes UPshop Different From Everything Else

Anyone can build an online store tool. We know that. So let us be honest about what makes UPshop genuinely different.

First: we never touch the seller's money.

Every other platform in this space either charges commission on sales, holds payments in a wallet, or routes money through their system before releasing it to sellers. UPshop does none of that. The buyer pays directly into the seller's account. UPshop never sees the money, never holds it, never has a reason to delay it. Zero commission. Zero payment processing fees on individual sales.

This was a deliberate decision. We designed the entire payment flow around how Nigerian commerce actually works, bank transfer confirmed by SMS alert rather than forcing sellers into payment gateway flows that add friction for both them and their buyers.

Second: we built a trust system.

One of the biggest reasons Nigerian buyers are hesitant to buy from unknown online sellers is trust. They have been burned. They have paid and received nothing. They are cautious, and rightfully so.

UPshop has a proprietary Trust Tier system that automatically scores every seller based on three things: how many orders they have successfully fulfilled, how long they have been active on the platform, and their cancellation rate. No paid badges. No fake reviews. The scores are calculated automatically every night and displayed publicly on every store.

A seller who is new gets the 🟠 New badge. A seller with a strong track record earns the ✅ Active Seller badge. The very best sellers earn the ⭐ Reliable Seller badge. Buyers can see this the moment they visit a store. It is the closest thing to a verified track record that informal Nigerian commerce has ever had.

You can see all verified sellers at upshop.ng/verified-sellers and read exactly how the system works at upshop.ng/how-we-verify.

Third: UPshop is built to grow with the seller.

The free plan gives sellers everything they need to start - five products, a store link, WhatsApp ordering, and a QR code. When they outgrow it, they upgrade. The paid plans start at just ₦2,500 per month and go up to ₦7,500 per month for sellers who want advanced analytics, custom domains, and up to 100 products.

No surprise fees. No commission cuts. No contracts. Cancel any time.

Who UPshop Is For

If you are reading this and thinking "this sounds like something I know someone who needs" - you are probably right. UPshop was built for:

  • Fashion sellers who post on Instagram and reply "DM for price" under every photo
  • Food vendors and caterers who take orders on WhatsApp and manage delivery through multiple conversations
  • Market traders who want customers across Nigeria but have no way to reach them
  • Side hustlers and students selling anything — skincare, accessories, second-hand items, digital products — and want to look more professional without the corporate paperwork
  • Restaurants and small chops sellers who want a digital menu customers can order from directly
  • Any small business that currently manages orders through WhatsApp and wishes there was a better way

If that is you or someone you know, the store is waiting. Create your free store at upshop.ng. It takes less than five minutes. No company registration. No corporate account. No coding skills.

Just your products, your prices, and a store link you are proud to share.
